The tensor tympani is a muscle within the ear that helps dampen loud sounds, particularly when you chew or speak. It reacts automatically to sudden noises, reducing the volume of sound to protect your hearing. Normally, you don’t notice this process because it functions smoothly. However, when you have Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome (TTTS), you might hear unusual, intrusive sounds like thunder, tapping, hammering, or even gunshot-like noises.
Symptoms of TTTS may include:
- Fluttering sensations in the ear
- Muffled hearing
- A feeling of fullness in the ears
- Balance problems
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Pain, numbness, or burning sensations in the ear area
- Headaches
- Vertigo or dizziness
Personally, I’ve never been able to tolerate loud voices, especially yelling. If someone raises their voice for too long, I hear a hammering or tapping sound with each word. It’s exhausting. Similarly, being in large crowds or surrounded by loud groups of people can be overstimulating. Afterward, I often need to recover in a quiet, peaceful space to recharge.
It’s a relief to finally understand what’s been going on all these years. While it’s not always easy, knowing that Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome is real, and that I’m not “crazy,” helps make sense of my experiences. For now, I find relief using CBD oil to stay relaxed, and I’m looking into acupuncture as another potential treatment.
If you have similar experiences or have been diagnosed with TTTS, I’d love to hear your story. It’s always comforting to connect with others who can relate.
